How To Use Dog Training Treats For The Sit and Down Commands

Dog training treats can be an effective way to tame the wild dog. The key to effective training using dog training treats is to use them in a very controlled manner. In other words, it's up to you to make sure that the dog doesn't get a treat whenever she wants one. Only offer the treat as a legitimate reward for a job well done. Dog training treats amount to nothing more than a bribe, but can be good for teaching basic commands such as come, sit, and stay. You can also use dog training treats to correct a bad habit or to help with housebreaking the dog.

The method of the use of treats for training a dog can be summed up in teaching the dog how to sit. First, gather the treats and keep them handy in your pocket or a small sandwich bag. Some stores even sell pouches specifically for easy access to small treats. Take the treat and hold it above the dog's head while saying the command sit. Make sure to hold the treat high enough that she actually has to sit and look up to see the treat. Reward her with the treat and praise her. Repeat this exercise a few more times, then do the entire process again the next day.

During the course of the day, you can reinforce the command, especially at mealtimes. Hold her dish above her head and issue the sit command. Once she does sit, let her have her dish.

You can use treats for a more advanced command such as down. To teach the down command, have the dog sit. But instead of rewarding her with the treat right away, hold the treat and motion it downwards so she follows it. As her head comes down to the floor, issue the down command. When your hand and the treat reach the floor, slowly move the treat away from the dog to force her to lie down to get the treat. Down is a little more difficult and requires quite a bit of patience, as some dogs will have a tendency to pounce at your hand instead of lying down. Always remember to praise the dog as she receives the treat for extra positive reinforcement.
